CHIME CLOCK No. 56

Circa 1925

Seth Thomas Clock Co.
Thomaston, Connecticut

Catalog No. AS052.4  Additional Pictures

Movement:  An original, Seth Thomas Trade Marked, 8-day Time, Strike and Chime movement. The movement model number 124 is the Seth Thomas work horse movement and is found in many different case styles. Westminster chime sequence is played on a set of four tuned rods. Following the hour chime sequence, it announces the hour on a single chime rod.

The #124 movement has a rack and snail strike train, which keeps the time and strike features coordinated as long as the clock is kept wound. It is also fitted with an automatic time/strike/chime correction feature which resets the chime sequence should it get out of sync when the clock runs down or the time is reset. Combined, these features give the owner nearly a hands-off synchronization. Whenever the time, strike, and chime get out of sync because the clock ran down, the owner, without the help of a clock smith or the need to take the clock off the shelf, simply winds and starts the clock and then sets the correct time. The chime sequence and hour striking will get back in sync within the about two hours. Today’s busy clock owners appreciate this feature as much now as it was by clock owners over 86 years ago

Case style and Trim: The case shape is a classic “Tambour” (or in some circles a ‘hump-back, or a “Napoleons Hat”) that came into style in the early 19 teens. The basic wooden case is made of mahogany. The base is composed of a finely milled decorative molding which accents the patterns in the fine grained mahogany. It sits on four ‘biscuit’ feet.

The clock case has not been refinished. It has been carefully cleaned and polished without disturbing the original finish.

The silvered dial sports a 4 7/8 inch diameter chapter ring which surrounds recessed, easy-to-read, black –wax filled Arabic numerals. Time is pointed out by a pair of original, black pierced-steel hands.

We are offering you an elegant example of well preserved, 86 year-old clock offered by Seth Thomas (in its 1925 catalog) to the ‘roaring 20’s high-fashion clock market by a well-respected Connecticut-clock maker.

The original, brass-clad, pendulum bob and a replacement double-ended key are included.

It has been fully serviced in our shop and is ready to put in your home, in your office, in your shop for resale OR, given as a 'timeless' gift.

Dimensions: 9 1/4" high x 20 1/2" wide x 6” deep at base

Catalog No. AS052.4 Price: $ 550.00

"BANJO"
, Normandy Chime

Circa: 1929

Gilbert Clock Company
Winsted Connecticut

Catalog No. AS015  Additional Pictures

Movement: An original, Gilbert Trade Marked, 8-day Time and Strike movement. Gilbert’s “Normandy Chime” or “Bim-Bam” (2-tone) striking movement is found in several different case styles. . The hour is struck in a 2-note series using two rods and the ½ hour is struck on a single rod.

It has a rack and snail strike train, which keeps the time and strike features coordinated. It is also fitted with a "turn-back" time/strike setting feature. This feature allows the owner to correct the time and the hour struck whenever they get out of sync without the help of a clock smith. This was a 'modern' innovation in its day and is still greatly appreciated by today’s busy clock owner. The original pendulum bob and a replacement key are included.

Case Style and Trim: The case is a classic Banjo style with a hand-rubbed mahogany finish with a contrasting box-wood inlay in the throat. The paper tablet’s pastoral scene in the bottom glass is in very good condition. The long throat is set off by scrolling polished brass rails. The case is topped by a gilded eagle.

The silvered dial sports a 4 ¾ inch diameter chapter ring which surrounds large, easy-to-read, raised gold-colored numerals. Time is pointed out by a pair of original gold-colored, proprietary pierced hands.

Catalog No. AS010.3  Additional Pictures

Movement: An original, Gilbert Trade Marked, 8-day Time and Strike movement. Gilbert’s “Normandy Chime” or “Bim-Bam” (2-tone) striking movement as found in another case style. The hour is struck in a 2-note series using two rods and the half hour is struck on a single rod.

It has a rack and snail strike train, which keeps the time and strike features coordinated. It is also fitted with a "turn-back" time/strike setting feature. This was a 'modern' innovation in its day and is still greatly appreciated by today’s busy clock owner. The original chromed pendulum bob and a replacement key are included.

Case Style and Trim: This is a classic box clock with clean, straight lines and a dark mahogany finish. Its striking feature is the chromed, cylindrical pendulum flashing behind the large beveled glass door. The two chromed Bim-Bam gong rods can also be seen behind the pendulum add a bit of interest. Both the crown and the base are set off by 3-dimentional gold-colored accent pieces. It is our opinion the clock case has not been refinished. It has been carefully cleaned and polished without disturbing the original finish.

"IGNATZ" or "The Flying Pendulum Clock"

Reproduction, Circa: 1960

The Horolovar Company
Bronxville, New York

Catalog No. AS011.4  Additional Pictures

This is a reproduction of an Original 1885 novelty clock by Jerome & Co. (Which became the New Haven Clock Company.) The original version is truly a rare find as relatively few of them were made. They were sold mainly to clock shop owners and jewelry store operators as an attention-getting device for their storefront window display. Hence, very few were sold to the general public. Recently, an original of this model sold at a very reputable auction house for $1,500.00. Now after only 40 years since its introduction, the reproduction "IGNATZ", complete with shipping box and papers, is also becoming a scarce, if not rare, heavily sought-after collector’s prize.

Movement: A 30-hour, Time only, movement made in Germany for Horolovar Company. It is a ‘Novelty Clock’ and a notoriously poor timekeeper. The key and time-set knob, which normally remain attached to the clock, are original and are included. It has been fully serviced in our shop and is ready to put in your home, in your office, in your shop window (for resale?) OR given as a 'timeless' gift. It’s a great conversation piece wherever it is displayed.

Case Style and Trim: Rectangular in shape, it is made of white wood stained mahogany. It sits on stamped brass feet and sports stamped brass decorative trim on the sides and front. All parts of this reproduction are original. The paper face has a 2 ¾ inch diameter chapter ring, black Arabic numerals and black steel hands. The polished brass bezel and sash are in their original condition. The round, flat glass is in excellent condition. This choice item is being offered complete with the Original shipping box, a copy of "IGNATZ, The craziest Clock in the World" by Charles O Terwilliger, Jr., a booklet entitled, "About The Horolovar Flying Pendulum Clock", and a spare pendulum. A great party ice breaker or a unique gift for that person on your Holiday gift-list who has almost everything.

Dimensions: 6 ¾" wide x 10" high x 7" needed clearance for pendulum swing at top.

Catalog No. AS011.4     Price: $ 295.00

Completely serviced with a One Year Guarantee. EXCEPT, no guarantee on springs, -new or used.

It has black Roman numerals, black hands and a 4 ¾ inch diameter chapter ring. The leaf/vine design on the door tablet is an authentic reproduction of the original tablet. The ornate nickel plated pendulum echoes the design on the tablet. It has a cast iron ‘Ansonia’ trade-marked gong base with the name in raised letters. The clock paper on the back of the clock, is in good condition, gives the model name, and helps date the clock.  All original.

Dimensions: 14¼" wide x 22¼" high x 4¾" deep at base

"REGULATOR A"

Circa 1920

Aichi Tokei Denki K.K.
Made in Japan by
Aichi Clock Company

 Catalog No. JW001  Additional Pictures

Movement: An original, Trademarked, 8-day Time & Hour-Strike movement. The trademark for the face and the movement are the same. The count-wheel strike train is fitted with a time/strike correction rod located on the left side and can be accessed through the bottom door. Whenever the time/strike gets out of sync, this feature allows the owner to advance the strike until the time and hour struck agree, without the help of a clocksmith. This movement only strikes the hour on a coiled authoritative, yet mellow Gong Wire. The large, brass-clad pendulum bob is original. A replacement single-ended key is included.

Case Style and Trim: This is a classic ‘drop’ style wall clock with its original dark mahogany finish in good condition. The case has been cleaned and polished. Not withstanding what it says on the door, this case more closely resembles Ansonia’s "Regulator C" than it does the "A" style. The large polished brass pendulum can be seen through the lower door—a great conversation starter.

The original off-white, painted-metal face is trademarked with the logo of the Aichi Clock Company, which was founded as the Mizuno Clock Company in 1892 in Nagoya. The name was changed to Aichi. The trademark on the face is made up of a black circle, inside of which there is a shaded letter "C", superimposed over the "C" is a white letter "A". The chapter ring is 8 3/4-inches in diameter with black Arabic-numerals—all clearly legible. The original black spade-style hands are painted steel; they have been refinished. The round wooden bezel is made up of 8-sections, holds a round flat glass, and has a chrome-plated brass sash, which accents the chapter ring. The reverse-painted "REGULATOR A" on the glass in the door appears to be original and is in excellent condition. The original paper label is mounted on the backboard inside the clock. It gives the manufacturer’s information and instructions for operating the clock. It is printed in black letters on a gray paper, is written in English and is still in very good condition. This clock has been fully serviced in our shop and is ready to put in your home, in your office, in your shop for resale OR given as a 'timeless' gift.

We are offering you a bit of history with an international flavor from the early 20th century that is original in nearly every respect, is in sound condition and is ready to take up its time keeping duties when it arrives.

Dimensions: 13 1/2" wide at the bezel x 21 1/2" high x 4 3/4 inches deep at base.

Catalog No. JW001     Price: $ 275.00

The "Golden Hour"

circa: 1964

The Jefferson Electric Company
Bellwood, Illinois

Catalog No. ASE010.2
Additional Pictures

The Golden Hour first went into production on December 2, 1949. It was the first and most popular of all the clocks manufactured by the Jefferson Electric Company. This one has the words "patent pending" on the maroon colored plastic bottom cover, which identifies it as one manufactured early in the clocks history. Later models with the maroon bottom cover show a patent number (2,642,713) and on still later models the bottom cover is black and has no patent number.

Movement: The clock is powered by a small electric motor located in the base. According to the information on the bottom cover it is "UL" listed, operates on 115 volts AC @ 60 cycles and has a power rating of 2.5 watts. Replacement motors are available and we usually have one in stock. The motor on this clock is new. All of the other moving parts have been cleaned and serviced in our shop. This beauty is ready to put in your home, in your office, in your shop window (for resale or as an attention getter?) OR given as a 'timeless' gift. It’s a great conversation piece wherever it is displayed.

Case Style and Trim: The Golden Hour is often referred to as the ‘mystery clock’ because the hands seem to float in the center of the chapter ring with no apparent connection to any spring or motor. It has a 7 3/8" chapter ring. The body of the clock is a 2-piece alloy casting with 24-karat gold plating. It has been cleaned and polished and the plating is still intact. The hands and related gear assembly are made of brass. The ‘Golden Hour’ is a functional, vintage timepiece that is at home in almost any décor. A great party ice breaker or a unique gift for that person on your Holiday gift-list who has almost everything.

Dimensions: 5 7/8" wide x 4 ½" deep x 9" high.

JEFFERSON GOLDEN MINUTE

 circa 1958
(date stamped 1-28-58)

The Jefferson Electric Company
Bellwood, Illinois

Catalog No. AS069  Additional Pictures

In 1951, while still enjoying the great marketing success of both the "Golden Hour" and the "Golden Helm", The Jefferson Electric Co. introduced the smaller version of the Golden Hour and named it the "Golden Minute". The basic design of this model and the way it operates is essentially the same as the Golden Hour. And, at first look it appears to be just a smaller version of the Golden Hour. However, on close inspection one finds that it is nearly identical to its older cousin, the Golden Helm. For example, it is the same size, the same shape (minus the nautical motif) and uses the same type of motor; and, it has the same dark red or maroon-colored, plastic, almost triangular-shaped cover that closes the bottom of the Golden Helm. However, it is inscribed, Jefferson Golden Minute, Electric Clock, Catalog No. 580-121.

Movement: The clock is powered by a small electric motor located in the base. According to the information on the bottom cover the motor is "UL" listed, operates on 115 volts AC @ 60 cycles and has a power rating of 2.5 watts. Replacements for this type of motor are very difficult to find. The fully functional motor in this clock is date stamped 11-74 indication that the original motor has been replaced. It still has its original power cord, which is in good condition. All of the other moving parts that make up this clock have been cleaned and serviced in our shop.

Case Style and Trim: Like its larger, older relative, the Golden Hour and its close cousin, the Golden Helm, the Golden Minute is also often referred to as a ‘mystery clock’ because the hands seem to float in the center of the chapter ring with no apparent connection to any spring or motor. It has a 5 1/8-inch, brushed, silver-colored chapter ring with recessed, white-filled numbers. The body of the clock is a 2-piece alloy casting with 24-karat gold plating. It has been cleaned and polished and, the original plating looks almost new. The shape of the hands is similar to those on the Golden Hour. Their visibility is enhanced by the use of a white stripe down the center of each hand. The hands and related gear assembly are made of brass.

Dimensions: 6-inches wide (across the diameter of the face frame) x 5 ¼-inches deep (allowing for the cord) x 7 ¼-inches high

Catalog No. ASE001.7     Price: $ 215.00

Completely serviced with a One Year Guarantee. EXCEPT, no guarantee on springs, -new or used.

JEFFERSON GOLDEN VIEW

circa 1958

The Jefferson Electric Company
Bellwood, Illinois

Catalog No. ASE031  Additional Pictures

In 1956, while still enjoying the great marketing success of the Golden Hour, the Golden Helm, and the Golden Minute, The Jefferson Electric Co. introduced the Golden View. The basic design of this model and the way it operates is essentially the same as the Golden Minute. The dials are the same size and they use the same type of motor. A stamped, metal rectangular-shaped cover closes the bottom of the Golden View’s mahogany base. However, it is inscribed, Jefferson Golden View, Electric Clock, Catalog No. 580-151-001.

Movement: The clock is powered by a small electric motor located in the base. According to the information on the bottom cover the motor is "UL" listed, operates on 115 volts AC @ 60 cycles and has a power rating of 2.5 watts. Replacements for this type of motor are very difficult to find. However, a NEW, fully functional motor has been installed in this clock. It still has its original power cord, which is in good condition. All of the other moving parts that make up this clock have been cleaned and serviced in our shop.

Case Style and Trim: Like its older relatives, the Golden Hour, the Golden Helm, and its close cousin, the Golden Minute, the Golden View is also often referred to as a ‘mystery clock’ because the hands seem to float in the center of the chapter ring with no apparent connection to any spring or motor. It has a 5 1/8-inch, black chapter ring with recessed, gold-filled numbers. The two-part body of the clock is made up of an alloy casting face ring with 24-karat gold plating and a polished mahogany base. A ½-round gold accent strip surrounds the base. It has been cleaned and polished and, the original plating looks almost new. The shape of the hands is identical to those on the Golden Minute. Their visibility is enhanced by the use of a black stripe down the center of each hand. The hands and related gear assembly are made of brass.

Dimensions: 6-inches wide (across the diameter of the face frame) and 14 ¼-inches across the wooden base x 5 ¼-inches deep (allowing for the cord) x 7 ¼-inches high.
